We are pleased to Spotlight Northwest based artist Bella Ormseth. As a very sought after painter in our roster of artists we're thrilled to highlight 3 works of hers this month.
Ormseth creates meticulously rendered portraits of anthropomorphic mushrooms and fungi embroiled in everyday human activities. These protagonists are often accompanied by various insect and woodland fauna companions, often in the role of associates, or even pets. Her work contains echoes of the Dutch 17th century artists in tone and palette, and Ormseth hails from the Netherlands originally herself. Feeling a kindred-ship and inspiration from those creators, she has intensely studied various painters in the oeuvre and usually takes inspiration from a specific painter for each painting - using influences gleaned from the old masters to create modern works. She is also an avid naturalist, and her use of plant and fungi life as narrative characters comes from both the love of the subject, but also wanting to depict universal situations and feelings without them being buried under the visible outside factors of gender, race, age ect, and yet have a recognizable stand in for the "everyday man". The result is a series of work that is rich, layered, humorous, and enchanting.
