Kim Slate - “In The Wild

new sculptures

September 2nd - 30th 2023

Opening night reception September 2nd 6-9pm

Portland based sculptor Kim Slate creates sculptures of cartoonish animals that are exercises in sheer delight. Often depicted in pairs the creatures always have naughty, whimsical grins. Slate's background in animation (she worked on Coraline, Kubo and recently Guillermo Del Toro's "Pinocchio") shines through and creates a sense of familiarity with Slate's work while remaining true to her trademark style.

“Since childhood I have been fascinated with wild and exotic animals. My current work attempts to explore their mysterious inner lives and relationships. I strive to create a narrative that will capture the imagination, with each piece resembling a single frame of a film. I hope the viewer will imagine the moments before and after what is depicted, to sense the personalities of the subjects and the fullness of the world they occupy. I think it is through narrative and not just observation that we attempt to understand our world. Art has always been an avenue for me to communicate, to share my interpretation of what I see, and hopefully to amuse, delight, distract, and illuminate.” - Kim Slate
