Roq La Rue is please to present a new group show this May, "Wild Mystics", featuring works by nine artists.
The term "mystic" has morphed and changed over the years- from denoting an overpowering sense of transcendent union or a rapturous communion in some way with the "divine" other, either internally or externally. Over time it additionally came to more narrowly denote a connection to the metaphysical or occult. Ultimately it implies becoming a channel of sorts for a enigmatic and powerful creative force, and what better way to describe the act of creating art?
The artists in this show have interpreted this theme in a multitude of ways, from the reverence of connection to nature, to contemplation of the crossing into the unknowable divine (assuming there is one), to nods to more surreal and spiritualist practices.
