The gallery is thrilled to welcome artist Sarah Best back to the gallery for her first solo show at Roq La Rue, "Supernatural". Sarah's eye catching work is a mix of collage and manipulated cut paper that she "sculpts" into raised, curved, and dimensional shapes. These are then encased in sleek shadowbox frames.
Her subject matter deals with entwined environmental and spiritual issues, using totemic animals and plants fused into fantastical forms as if witnessed in a dream and captured in the moment of dynamic, fractalesque transformation.
Artist Statement for “Supernatural”
“Reflecting on the ecological niche of humans, I explore themes of regeneration, transformation, death, and rebirth, often using symbolic images of snakes, moths, birds, and bones. Throughout this body of work, you will see the ancient nautilus, with its spiraled shell, echoing the DNA in our cells and the very cosmos we exist. This living fossil reminds us that the human experience, like the sacred geometry of the shell, is a continuously growing spiral, allowing us to build on our past experiences to understand and meet the challenges of the present moment. With a process that combines mixed media, collage, and sculptural techniques, I manipulate paper into dimensional moments of suspended disbelief, inviting the viewer to reawaken to the enchantment of our timeless nature connection and the sacred balance to which we are inextricably bound.” - Sarah Best
