Roq La Rue is pleased to present a new show of works by Lola Gil.
Based on a style she calls "Narrative Escapism", Gil's works exhibit a soft tension, with soft, creamy painting style contrasting with often tension filled narratives. Her work often exhibits a fascination with surface and reflection, and is often filled with miniscule detail mixed with swaths of looser brushwork. This contrast often leads people to think they are looking at mixed media photo collage, but it is all completely rendered by hand with a brush.

This show, "Window Journey" continues Lola's exploration into themes that increasingly dominat our lives and anxieties, from the massive turmoil currently roiling in the United States to global climate issues. Her work seeks to explore the anxieties and fears of our times, while also seeking to find a path to renewed hope.

"This show is my response to the series of events the world has endured over our past 7 months. I quietly started painting the show in April, right after it all began. Self quarantine, covid related deaths, civil unrest, climate change, the current US president... I was initially driven by my feelings from isolation, but  as each tragedy unfolded, I found it more important to focus on the large collective of emotions being expressed after going unheard over the past century. I'm an empath by nature, but never have I felt such strong empathy and sympathy for our fellow humans who go mistreated. This is such an IN YOUR FACE moment, filled with racial tension inequality and hate. And it demands change! The simple fact is, no one person should be worth any more than the person next to them. That type of entitled mentality can be changed in time if we can implement a plan to educate from an emotional level. If one could stare deep in the eyes of an individual less fortunate. If one could hear their stories, and understand where they came from, a universal empathy would have the chance to grow. My best way to share this idea with those I can reach, is through these paintings. I hope it brings about feelings of discomfort, reflection, and then eventual hope for a new way of loving one another." - Lola Gil
