Lindsey carr
Scotland
Scotland based painter Lindsey Carr has exhibited at the gallery for years, with her first exhibitions focusing on her humorous spins on meticulously painted and gilded homages to Victorian Orientalist art featuring birds and mammals as protagonists. Since then her practice has evolved into deep dives into the floral masterpieces of the Dutch Golden Age painters, but with a highly distorted and surrealistic spin. Her latest works expand upon than theme but has added a sci fi influence, featuring fantastical plants in otherworldly landscapes. Her works range from dark and atmospheric to hyper color palettes, with an incredibly refined painting technique.
“I combine traditional oil painting techniques with unexpected source references to create my work. My main inspirations are the rich symbolism of 16th-century Dutch still life paintings and the imaginative realms of science fiction.
With a background as a programmer, I use unconventional methods—like programmatic experiments, photography, and handcrafted maquettes—to generate my source material. This tension between traditional techniques and experimental processes is at the heart of my practice.” - Lindsey Carr
