March 2008: Robert Burden a solo exhibition by emerging San Francisco artist Robert Burden. Burden paints the action figures taken from his youth, in large scale formats and epic atmospheres. February 2008: a Cabinet Of Natural Curiosities a huge group show entitled “A Cabinet Of Natural Curiosities”. We asked our artists to create works relating to animals. December 2007: Shag Known for his vibrant, retro graphic style, Shag has made a huge name for himself with his blend of pop iconography and mid century modern, cocktail culture sensibilities. November 2007: Brian Despain, Scott Musgrove, and Ryan Heshka three amazing artists return to Roq La Rue October 2007: Ojimbo and Yumiko Kayukawa a great show featuring two returning artists, painter Yumiko Kayukawa and sculptor/carver Ojimbo (who will be supplying us with our monster quotient for Halloween!) September 2007: Amy Sol, Stella Im Hultberg, and Oksana Badrak both artists explore some of the darker aspects of human nature, such as sexuality and fear. Both artists, although stylistically quite different, use a combination of expert artistic draftsmanship mixed with audacious subject matter. July 2007: Kukula and Nicoletta Ceccoli two artists who create paintings of young women in fanciful, melancholic situations. June 2007: Venus - featuring the work of two new forces in the contemporary/Pop Surrealism movement. Both blend a an aura of childhood nostalgia with humor as well as poignancy. May 2007: Matthew Pasquarello and Chris Thompson - featuring the work of two new forces in the contemporary/Pop Surrealism movement. April 2007: Amazing Visions - a groundbreaking show featuring some of the most talented and revered artists working in the Fantasy/Sci Fi art world. March 2007: Luis Sanchez and Lizz Lopez -- two new artists to Roq La Rue. Luis Sanchez exibits beautiful works on canvas in fresco and acrylic. Lizz Lopez paints a series of nurses in acrylic on panel. February 2007: Femke Hiemstra, Ronald Kurniawan, and David Ho -- three artists who all work very differently yet share a commonality in their use of lively and fantastical subject matter. All artists explore the ideas of the enigmatic and the ways our minds try to map the unknowable, whether it be the question of life after death and the idea of redemption, the maps the human brain imposes on nature via language, or an untold story. December 2006: MaDora Frey and Jean Pierre Roy -- haunting works by two emerging artists from New York. Both painters are exceptional at creating still moments in the peak of turbulent stories, and cause the viewer's imagination to wonder what lead to each moment captured. While the subject matter is often dark, the paintings and destruction within are mesmerizing and beautiful. November 2006: Retrorama! -- a show by 5 artists who paint using techniques culled from older generations of artists and designs, yet each giving the work their own unique twist. October 2006: Monster Mayhem and Day of the Dead Delights -- a Halloween themed show (like we usually do). Rather than a group show, this year we decided to focus on two extraordinary artists working in the Lowbrow genre: Pooch and Ojimbo Pooch and Ojimbo September 2006: Tiki Art Now 3 -- a very special show devoted to the bewitching and sundry charms of Polynesian Pop and Tiki! Curated by urban archeologist/ tiki aficionado Otto Von Stroheim (of Tiki News and several outstanding Tiki Art Now shows). August 2006: Undertow 2 -- Group show curated by Alix Sloan July 2006: Audrey Kawasaki, Myna Sonou, and Scott Altmann June 2006: Fresh Meat -- Group show featuring lots of fresh talent ranging from contemporary figurative to retro illustration, true down and dirty rock n roll Lowbrow to sublime exquisitely rendered Surrealism. May 2006: Alternate Realities -- a show featuring two New York painters who combine flawless painterly skill combined with mesmerizing scenarios largely influenced by dreams. April 2006: Once Upon A Time -- new work by spanish artist Catalina Estrada. Also, a mini show Ever After - paintings by Gretchen Ryan, Moira Hahn, and Amy Crehore. March 2006 : Triple threat -- three talented Northwest artists invade Roq La Rue. February 2006 : Sweetest Taboo -- a group show curated in collaboration with Damion Hayes of Cut Kulture United. January 2006 : Scion Installation tour Featuring talented artists this time painting on 3' foot long polyurethane sculptures of the Scion tC designed by Wheaty Wheat Studios. October 2005: Bad Moon Rising -- Our Halloween show exibited works by artists from all over the country as well as overseas. The work, while dealing with dark themes, ranges wildly from the dark, futuristic digital portraits by Quintin Gonzales to the more playful cartoony paintings of Pooch. We are excited by the return of gallery artists such as Lisa Petrucci, Jim Blanchard, and Mike Leavitt as well as works by new artists to the gallery such as tattooist and painter James McLeod, Japanese Pop Surrealist Yo Ueno, and Lowbrow wood carver Ojimbo. August 2005: The Devil's Hobby Hut -- Charles Krafft and Frank Kozik. Charles Krafft returns to the gallery with a series of new works, including new Spone as well as his Mad Cow Creamers. The legendary Frank Kozik will have be making his first appearance at the gallery and will be creating an installation! Through Sept 1. July 2005: Big Rock Candy Mountain contemporary artists influenced by southern and western folk art. Gary Monroe - Thomas Huck - Jon Langford - Fred Stonehouse - Daniel Martin Diaz - Ryan Greis. June 2005: Lori Earley -- Lori Earley's seamless paintings of darkly beautiful and enigmatic women painted with a masterly hand and an unbelievable eye for lighting have burst onto the Pop Surre alism scene and quickly garnered her an impressive collector and fan base. Roq la Rue is pleased to present two exceptional talents to the Pop Surrealism/Lowbrow art world, one an emerging artist rapidly making a name for himself, and the other a long respected talent in the comic book industry who has turned his hand to painting his own visions. February 2005: Burnout Network -- a vibrant show featuring six Japanese artists who work within the “Kustom Kulture” movement. Curated by Nash Yoshii, featuring work by Makoto, Mr. G, Rockin’ Jellybean, Sugisack, Widerange, and Grimb. December 2004: Joe Newton and Mike Leavitt -- for its last show of 2004, Roq La Rue presented a new show of works by two Seattle artists, Joe Newton and Mike Leavitt. November 2004: The Pin Up Show -- a group show featuring the hot stuff that gets ya going. Artists included Kirsten Easthope, Lisa Petrucci, Jason Nelson, The Pop Tarts, Lynne Naylor, Michiko, Miles Thompson, Erin Norlin, Joe Chiodo, and more. October 2004 : Monsters A Go Go -- group Spook Show Extravaganza devoted to kooky, campy monsters and the more amusing aspects of the macabre. Artists include Shag, Camille Rose Garcia, Lisa Petrucci, Liz McGrath, Andrew Brandou, Miles Thompson, XNO, Joshua Petker, Pooch, Joe Vollan, Luke Chueh, Joe Vaux, The Pizz, Moira Hahn, Ryan Bubnis, Mike Maas, Jim Blanchard and many more! May 2003: A Sweet Sickness -- A group show of new paintings by Lisa Petrucci, Andrew Brandou, Kevin Scalzo, Dave Burke, and Extremo the Clown. Taking cues from vintage children's boo ks, carnival sign painting, 60's TV shows, Charles Addams, and Japanese anime, this is a cartoon sideshow of pop whimsy! November 2002: The Clayton Brothers -- We are thrilled to present a show by the amazing Clayton Brothers. Their new show Candy Lackey will fill the gallery with a range of works, in their trademark dreamy folk inspired style. October 2002: Jason D'Aquino -- If Leonardo DaVinci illustrated Alice in Wonderland, it would look similar to Jason D'Aquino's tiny, intricate drawings on old found paper and matchbooks. September 2002: Anthony Ausgang and Yumiko Kayukawa -- Anthony Ausgang paints a brilliantly colored, Tex Avery-on-hallucinogens style of cartoon animals. Yumiko brings us candy bright pop paintings of fashionable young women, animals, and traditional Japanese motifs. August 2002: Jim Blanchard -- Sticker Shock II. Jim Blanchard shows his new series of giant eyepopping sticker portraits of notorious celebrities such as Sharon Tate, Lee Marvin, Richard Roundtree (Shaft), James Caan, Clint Eastwood, and Elvis. July 2002: Kreepy Krafts and Sean Miller -- Group Show of artists working in traditional craft mediums yet creating very untraditional art. Charles Kraff t, Theresa Sullivan, Jenny Hart, Sara Lanzillota, Kipling West, Petra Swinehart. Sean Miller shows paintings inspired by Irish freedom fighters and museum dust. June 2002: Blair Wilson -- Blair Wilson is a Seattle artist who has made his mark through his completely unique and attention grabbing paintings and illustrations. April 2002: Joe Newton and Andrea Tucker -- Joe Newton shows his Japanese-pop meets Appalachian foothills style paintings. Andrea Tucker unveils a new series of paintings based on the Tarot and Sideshow Personalities. March 2002: Shag's An Open Letter to the Emporer -- New works by Shag, hot & hip artist famous for his depictions of a mythical Swinger's Life with the requisite women, cocktails, lounges and sports cars. August 2001: Americana Group Show -- All the talent you can handle showing their renditions of what makes this country so goddamned great. Or...not so great... July 2001: Dean Karr and Yumiko Kayukawa -- Rock-photographer-to-the-gods Karr shows us why he's the man and Kayukawa drops in on us from Japan to show her gorgeous foxy-girl illustrations and paintings. June 2001: Art Garcia and David Tupper -- Two local guys mix it up. Tupper ( I ♥ Mom show) shows new paintings based on his background in So. Cal. and Garcia shows paintings, constructions, and silkscreens based around his recent travels. May 2001: A show of drawings and illustrations by two of the world's premiere cartoonist/illustrators, Dan Clowes and Chris Ware. Both are precise and meticulous craftsmen who combine a twisted world view with large doses of dark humor. March 2001: Booska Fuzzy Love Triangle -- Martin Ontiveros, Bwana Spoons, and Saiman Chow all had t he pleasure of meeting and working together in a group show a year ago--friendship and a mutual admiration for each other's work blossomed and before the opening had drawn to a close, little doubt was on their minds that another collaboration was due.
